Hazard Perception Test

Driving Lesson

We recommend you build your Hazard Perception Skills by using DriveSmart. DriveSmart is a free online training product that can help you become a better, safer driver.

DriveSmart accelerates your learning of skills, such as scanning and hazard perception, as you prepare to take your probationary licence test.

The online training program takes you through a range of interactive driving scenarios and quizzes, asking you to make judgements on safe driving practices and increasing your skills in the process. It's the perfect partner to the hands-on experience you get practising in a car.

Three years of research conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre using state-of-the- art driving simulators has gone into the development of DriveSmart. Scientific studies have shown that completing the program will help you significantly to develop safer driving skills.

To access DriveSmart click on the following link: DriveSmart

Once you have completed using DriveSmart you can then use Vicroad's Hazard Perception Practice Test

Drive Test

Driving

We recommend our students book their Drive Test at least 4-6 weeks prior to wanting to do their Drive Test.

We recommend you book your Driving Test on a Weekday between the hours of 9:30AM and 1:30PM (this way you will not need to worry about the School Zones). Preferably book your Driving Test at your local Vicroads Office (your Instructor will help you become familiar with driving in this area.)

• Remember to contact your Instructor prior to booking your Driving Test to confirm their availability.

We recommend that you book your HPT (Hazard Perception Test) at least 2 weeks prior to the day of your Drive Test, your HPT must be passed before your Drive Test can be done (if you hold or have held a licence - you may be exempt).

• The easiest way to book your Drive Test is online by visiting https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ and pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard)

For more information on get Getting your Ps, Booking your Hazard Perception and Drive Test you can visit the Vicroads Website – Get Your Ps

The Drive Test Checks that you can:

 Drive Safely
• Drive Smoothly
• Obey the road rules
• Co-operate with other road users

» Speed Limits - When driving you’ll need to drive close (within 10km/h) to the speed limit when conditions are suitable, but at a lower speed if road or traffic conditions (e.g. driving on a wet or unsealed road, or in congested or slow traffic or around corners) make it unsafe to travel at the speed limit. But do not exceed the speed limit at any time! (It’s particularly important to monitor your speed closely when driving down hills, when changing lanes, in construction zones and in 40km/h zones.)

» Stop Signs - You’ll need to ensure your vehicle comes to a complete stop behind all stop lines.

» Leaving the Kerb - Check your mirrors, indicate to the right for minimum of 5 seconds and complete a Head Check to ensure it’s safe prior to moving off.

» Unlaned Roards - On Roads without lane markings travel in the left lane unless you are overtaking or preparing to make a right turn.

» Lane Changes - You’ll need to use your mirrors to select a safe gap in the traffic, indicate in the direction of intended travel for a minimum of 3 seconds and include a Head Check to ensure it’s safe prior to changing lanes.

» Safety Margin – You’ll need to maintain an acceptable safety margin from other vehicles and fixed objects. In dry conditions you’ll need to maintain a safety margin of at least two seconds from the vehicle front of yours and in the wet, at least a three second gap. When passing or overtaking stationary vehicles/objects or moving vehicles, a width of 1.2 metres is suggested (approximately a car door width), depending on conditions. Eg. Driving at low speed would not necessarily require the same safety margin.

» Stopping Distance - When stopping behind a stationary vehicle, you’ll need to stop far enough behind to be able to proceed, if necessary, around the vehicle without reversing.

» Pedestrian Crossings - Do not block a pedestrian crossing.

» Mirrors - When driving straight you’ll need to check the mirrors (at least every 10 seconds) to maintain awareness of surrounding traffic. The required frequency varies with traffic conditions.

» Reversing - Always look back through the rear window prior to reversing.

» Road Laws - You’ll need to have thorough knowledge of the road laws and know your rights of ways.

Driving Tips

A really good driver must be able to deal with the unexpected – from hazards and changing weather conditions to other cars and road users. The only way you can do this is by getting lots of varied experience before you get your licence. Research shows that the more practice you get in different conditions, the lower your risk of being involved in an accident once your licensed. For example, learners with 120 hours of practice have been found to decrease their accident risk by 30% after licensing. If you need any assistance, remember we’re just a phone call away. You may be considering your Hazard Perception Test, an essential part of getting your Licence in Victoria. It’s a computerised test that accesses your Hazard Perception Skills before graduating to your P’s.

Hazard Perception, or Low Risk Driving, is being able to identify potential crash situations before it is too late. This includes pedestrians crossing the road, cyclists, road works, building sites, other vehicles stopping in front of you or entering from side roads and many other dangerous situations that present hazards. We’ll teach you how to anticipate where hazards are or where they are likely to occur so you don’t get into dangerous situations. Research is showing that if young drivers are able to develop skills in identifying hazards in the driving environment, they will become safer and more competent drivers.

You can improve your Hazard Perception Skills by following the DriveSmart link on our "Hazard Perception Test Page". It is designed to make you a better, safer driver by helping you develop your Hazard Perception skills. Remember we’re here to make it easier for you.

If you’re wanting to get your licence shortly it’s a good idea to book a couple of lessons so we can check your ability in different driving conditions and make sure you’re ready for your licence test. Remember, once you’re on your P’s you’ll be on your own.

Keep in touch, we’re here for your assistance. If you see us on the road give us a wave and say hello!

Best regards,

Rob & Herbie Lester
